For our LGBT youth, they get kicked out of the home because parents aren’t willing or able to deal with it in the moment,” said Downing. In the late 1960s, a group of committed East Village residents – colleagues, friends, Manhattan College students, and neighbors – came together to provide a refuge for homeless and runaway youth. Eventually, the group’s work to shelter vulnerable young people gained momentum and became the Covenant Community.

“We had an all hands on deck approach last night to make our new residents comfortable,” Julia Einbond, executive director of Covenant House New Jersey, said. “The level of anxiety that most of them were experiencing is just, you know, exacerbated — some of the feelings that they already had, you know, and especially with the things that led to them to become homeless in the first place,” North said. We can guide you through our programs and answer any questions about the process right now. If there's anyone in your life who may be a victim of trafficking, find help below. If you have been the victim of a crime or need emergency assistance, call or contact your local police department below.

Covenant House then acquired a group of buildings on West 44th Street and moved its administrative offices to the new location, which moved into a retrofitted cluster of buildings on West 41st Street in 1979. Lend your voice and advocate for the rights of youth facing homelessness and survivors of trafficking. In 1972, Covenant House was officially incorporated with its first intake center established at 504 LaGuardia Place in lower Manhattan. As an established nonprofit, Covenant House began to raise money to provide shelter for homeless youth across New York City. In 1976, Covenant House acquired a group of buildings on West 44th Street in order to create a multiservice center near the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Staff began working with city and state agencies, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and with other Covenant House locations to find safe housing for their young people at a variety of different shelters. To address this challenge and ensure a community where all youth feel welcomed and heard, CHNY provided focused training for staff, in-person and electronic language courses for both staff and youth, and handheld translation devices, and we increased the number of our bilingual staff. Around the shelter signage now appears in multiple languages, including images and symbols in case a youth’s language is not represented. Through the pandemic, the Covenant House New York continues their education and workforce readiness classes.

Soon she hears her mother's sniffles change to steady breathing, then to the softest of snores, which in the girl's mind seem to impose order on the scattered sounds of the night, from the wooden walls exhaling the day's heat to the scuffing sound of the dog in the sandy courtyard outside. "The saddest day of a girl's life is the day of her wedding," her mother says. Lee initially asked lawmakers to keep guns away from people deemed a danger to themselves or others in response to the shooting, the Republican supermajority ignored that request. Even in a state as conservative as Tennessee, the reaction to the bill has included unease and disappointment. The skepticism has come not just from those who want tighter restrictions on firearms but also from some who generally believe strongly in gun rights. Their reluctance was rooted in doubts about the wisdom of placing such a daunting responsibility on teachers and other school workers.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said Thursday that he planned to sign a bill state legislators sent to his desk this week that would allow school staff members to carry concealed handguns on school grounds. In the late 1960s, the Reverend Bruce Ritter, a Franciscan priest, retired from his job as a professor at Manhattan College to begin a new ministry serving the city's poor. Joined by colleague Father James Fitzgibbon, he moved into a dilapidated tenement building in New York City's East Village. With volunteers, including friends, former students, and neighbors, he began an effort to help homeless and runaway young people. By 1970, Father Fitzgibbon had moved on to other ministries, but Father Ritter remained.

Rights of Passage (ROP) is a longer-term (up to 24 months) residential program for young adults who have transitioned out of a crisis shelter. Young people in our ROP Program work closely with case managers and social workers to create personalized plans that will ensure their success on moving into independent, permanent housing. Our Welcome Center and Youth Shelter team lovingly welcomes youth and meets their immediate needs for a hearty meal, a shower, fresh clothes, and a safe place to sleep. We then help young people develop a personal plan, with health, employment, education, and other goals. In February 1990, Covenant House founder and President Bruce Ritter was forced to step down in the wake of allegations of sexual and financial misconduct, beginning with the accusations of Kevin Kite, who accused Ritter of sexual abuse.

“The other service point that has been a learning curve for us is labor trafficking,” she notes. CHNY has a great deal of experience supporting young survivors of sex trafficking or commercial sexual exploitation. But among our newcomers, there is a high prevalence, she says, of having been labor trafficked in their home country or along their journey.

Downing says many of the 250 staff members are still working on-site with the transitional living programs. Downing shares that the shelter has treated 10 young people with the virus so far. Located on the premises is a federally qualified health center where medical staff can attend to those quarantined in the shelter. "Molay?" her father's only brother had said the previous day, to her surprise. Of late he wasn't in the habit of using the endearment molay—daughter—with her. "We found a good match for you!" His tone was oily, as though she were four, not twelve.

In 2018, we opened our new Family Covenant Program, which provides permanent housing support to 30 young adult families. In 2019, our Rapid Re-Housing Program opened to provide immediate permanent housing to an additional 50 youth. As of 2024, Covenant House New York provides over 75 permanent housing placements for youth experiencing homelessness.

But young people who come from other countries need health coverage in order to get X-rays and other treatments. Lisa says CHNY staff have become experts in identifying and applying for the appropriate health coverage. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee teachers and staff will be allowed to carry concealed handguns on public school grounds under legislation signed into law by Gov. Bill Lee on Friday. Lee on Thursday highlighted the legislation's requirements that faculty and staff members wishing to carry concealed handguns on school grounds complete a minimum of 40 hours of approved training specific to school policing every year. They also must obtain written authorization from law enforcement, he noted. Young people can access short-term emergency care through CHNY’s street outreach program, drop-in services, and emergency shelter.

Every year, more than 5,000 of these young people lose their lives to the streets. Your gift will help us continue to provide our youth with a safe place to sleep, clean clothes, food, and ultimately, a place to call home. Why would a man of good means marry a girl of little means, a girl without a dowry?
